Western South Dakota is one of those places that quietly captures your heart. Wide-open prairies, granite peaks, roaming wildlife, and iconic monuments all blend together into a trip that feels both deeply American and wildly adventurous. If you’re dreaming of a getaway filled with natural beauty, history, and unforgettable moments, this 6-day itinerary is the perfect place to start.

Whether you’re exploring with your family, traveling solo, or taking a road trip with friends, the Black Hills and Badlands offer something for every traveler. Below is the exact itinerary I used on my own trip—packed with highlights, scenic drives, good food, and a touch of Old West charm.

Day 1: Travel to Rapid City, South Dakota

Welcome to the heart of the Black Hills! Once you arrive in Rapid City, take a little time to settle in. Stroll through Downtown Rapid City, grab a bite to eat, and snap a few photos of the “City of Presidents” statues that line the streets.

If you have extra time, Dinosaur Park and Main Street Square are quick and easy stops to stretch your legs after a travel day.

Day 2: Guided Tour of Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse & Custer State Park

Day two is all about the South Dakota icons—and having a guide means you can sit back, relax, and simply enjoy the adventure.

Your tour will includes:

⭐ Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Stand beneath the granite faces of four American presidents and learn the history behind the carving. Don’t forget to walk the Presidential Trail for closer views.

⭐ Crazy Horse Memorial

This still-in-progress mountain carving is truly massive in scale. Explore the visitor center, museums, and learn about Lakota culture and the story behind the project.

⭐ Custer State Park – Wildlife Loop Road

One of the best wildlife experiences in the region. Keep your eyes open for:

  • Bison herds

  • Burros (who may walk right up to your vehicle)

  • Pronghorn

  • Big-horn sheep

Your guide will handle the driving so you can fully enjoy the views and take photos of the wildlife roaming across the rolling hills and open prairie.

This is a full, unforgettable day—and having a guided tour makes it even better.

Day 3: Explore Rapid City + Dinner at Fort Hays Chuckwagon

Spend your morning exploring Rapid City more deeply. Great options include:

  • The Journey Museum & Learning Center

  • Art Alley (perfect if you love murals and photography)

  • The Chapel in the Hills

  • Storybook Island (if you’re traveling with kids)

End the day with dinner at Fort Hays Chuckwagon, where you’ll enjoy hearty cowboy-style food and live Western entertainment. It’s fun, quirky, and completely fits the South Dakota vibe.

Day 4: Hot Springs, South Dakota & The Mammoth Site

Head south to the charming town of Hot Springs. The star here is The Mammoth Site, an active paleontological dig site where dozens of mammoths have been uncovered. You can walk right above the bones and learn about the ongoing research—it’s fascinating no matter your age.

While in town, you can also explore:

  • Evans Plunge Mineral Springs

  • Fall River Walking Path

  • Downtown Hot Springs’ sandstone architecture

It wouldn’t be a South Dakota trip without stopping at the legendary Wall Drug. Yes, it’s touristy—but it’s fun, nostalgic, and full of quirky photo ops. Grab a donut or a cup of their famous 5-cent coffee.

Then head into Badlands National Park for jaw-dropping landscapes of colorful rock formations, canyons, and layered cliffs. Drive the Badlands Loop Road, stop at scenic pullouts, and (if time allows) hike one of the shorter trails like:

  • Door Trail

  • Notch Trail

  • Fossil Exhibit Trail

Sunset in the Badlands is absolutely worth staying for if your schedule allows.

Day 6: Travel Home

After several days of adventure, wildlife, landscapes, and history, it’s time to head home. Western South Dakota leaves you with memories that stick with you long after your trip ends.
